ORGAN DUO RECITAL
Friday, October 26, 2007 • 7:30pm
Two great organists – one organ bench! Dr. Jennifer Pascual, Director of Music/Organist at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York City joins Dr. Lynn Trapp, Director of Worship/Music, Organist/Pianist at St. Olaf Church to perform a concert of music for four hands and four feet on the great Lively-Fulcher pipe organ. Music of the Baroque and Classical periods will sparkle. Psalm Variations by Hopkins will paint the text of the well-known verses of Psalm 23. Arrangements of American folktunes as well as the Irish Londonderry Air will highlight the many colors of the organ. Fancy for Two by Hancock and the virtuosic French Toccata by Bolting round off the program. Both artists are represented by World Library Publications/J. S. Paluch as members of the Liturgical Organists Consortium. Freewill offering. Reception follows.

Pastiche is an ensemble of performers from the faculty of the joint music department of the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John’s University in Minnesota. Pastiche performs an extraordinarily diverse repertoire composed for combinations of singers and instrumentalists from classical to jazz and beyond. This concert will feature David Arnott on the viola, Ed Turley at the piano and Bruce Thornton on clarinet. Free and open to the public. Plan to stay for our Memorial Mass of All Souls at 12Noon.

The Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra is Minnesota’s most highly regarded civic orchestral ensemble. Formed in 1982, the mission of the MSO is to serve its audience and its members by performing symphonic music of all periods and styles at the highest artistic level. Program: Brandenburg Concerto #3, BWV. 1048 by J. S. Bach; Ku-Ka-Ilimoku for Four Percussionists by Christopher Rouse; Serenade, op. 44 in D minor by Antonín Dvořák; and Symphony #3, Symphony Poem for organ, orchestra and fifteen trumpets by Aram Khachaturian (Dr. Lynn Trapp, organ soloist). Christian Art exhibit by He Qi, artist, Roseville, MN
Qi’s art blends Chinese folk customs and painting techniques with Western art from the Middle and Contemporary Ages to create works that are genuinely Christian and fully Chinese. Exhibit opens as part of the morning Lenten Retreat, Saturday, February 23 and continues before and after all weekend Masses on February 23 and 24. On February 25 the exhibit will be open 11am-1pm. This original, collaborative Performing Arts project between Catholic Theater Production Company, Epiphany Studio Productions, and the Saint Olaf Catholic Church Worship & Sacred Music Series returns for a second year. Featuring internationally known actor Jeremy Stanbary, this drama brings to life the Passion of Jesus Christ through the eyes of three gospel figures who were changed forever by their encounter with the Messiah: the Samaritan woman at the well, the man born blind, and Mary, the sister of Lazarus. Scripted by J. Stanbary, the play reveals deep insights into the human condition, the mystery of suffering, as well as God’s infinite mercy and love, in light of the arrest, passion and crucifixion of Jesus Christ. Cantus, a Twin Cities based full time professional male vocal chamber ensemble, joins forces with the renowned St. Olaf College Choir, Northfield, MN. This event brings two of the finest a cappella ensembles in the country together for a celebration of the human voice raised in song. The concert will feature both ensembles’ diverse repertoire, as well as collaborative pieces, including a new work by Twin Cities composer Edie Hill. World Voices is a musical ensemble dedicated to performing music from all over the world in native languages. The ensemble was founded on the premise that music is a universal language, one that draws people together, creating respect and community between diverse populations. This program will recall many of the varying cultural influences that were woven together by immigrants to make America what it is today.
