Vanishing Woman by

In this
second Father Gabriel Mystery, the priest/detective solves the mystery behind
the disappearance of the most hated woman in town. Enid Jennings, a retired
headmistress and embittered war widow, seems to cause trouble wherever she
goes. When her daughter claims to have seen her mother vanish into thin air,
Father Gabriel enters the scene. With help from the town physician and
hostility from Inspector Applegate, he digs into Enid’s past and, in the
process, discovers some unexpected secrets of this post-war English
village.
