St. Olaf parishioners work with A Brush with Kindness, a project of Habitat for Humanity, to construct, paint and fix-up area homes for families in need.

In 2002–2007, St. Olaf volunteers partnered with Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity, and other downtown congregations, to build numerous homes in North Minneapolis and Heritage Park, a mixed income housing development off Highway 55 near I-94. In 2009, the St. Olaf ministry transitioned to work with A Brush with Kindness. Since then, more than 90 parishioners have taken part in painting and fixing-up homes for lower-income families determined to maintain their home and stay in their community.

A Brush with Kindness is a program that helps preserve home ownership by partnering with homeowners struggling to restore and maintain a safe and decent place to live. When basic expenses exceed income month after month, home maintenance is the usual casualty. Years of deferred maintenance can cause a downward spiral of home deterioration and unsafe living conditions. A Brush with Kindness is about connecting people and restoring homes through simple acts of kindness so that homeowners can once again live in a safe and decent home.
