What is RCIA?
The Rite of Christian Initiation for
Adults (RCIA) is a process that offers formation into the Catholic faith
and way of life for non-baptized adults, Christians of other
denominations, and adult Catholics who have not been confirmed. RCIA
members have the opportunity to ask questions about the Church and hear
about the message of Jesus Christ and how that message is lived out in
the Catholic Church.
How RCIA works
RCIA’s process provides a structure for:
— learning about the Catholic faith and way of life;
— catechesis (the passing on of the teachings of the church);
— public and private prayer;
— the opportunity to participate in faith-sharing groups;
— direct spiritual support from members of the Saint Olaf community;
— the observance of feasts, fasts, Sundays and seasons of the church calendar;
— participation in the work of the church for justice and peace;
— and the proclamation of the Gospel.
During this time, each participant is
paired with a sponsor who serves as a spiritual companion and offers
support and encouragement.
When is RCIA offered at Saint Olaf?
Classes begin in September, continuing
until shortly after Easter. Each meeting offers the opportunity to hear a
presentation on a wide range of topics, interact with presenters and
the group, and participate in small groups of faith sharing.
